Guide to entering the awards

We want you to be in the with best chance of winning a National Happiness Award, so we’ve written a handy guide to help you maximise your chances. Entering Britain’s brightest awards is a simple process but a few little tweaks to your entry could make all the difference. You’ll find suggestions for these in the handy hints section. But to start off with, here are the rules:

Find out more...

  • All entries must be submitted via the official online entry system before the final deadline on 29th October at midnight
  • All fees due must be paid in full before entries will be considered
  • Maximum total single file upload size for supporting evidence is 4mb
  • You can enter in more than one category
  • All material submitted must be your own original work that you own the copyright for.
  • You must hold the relevant rights and permissions to use any submitted material
  • By submitting entries and evidence you infer the National Happiness Awards permission to use the material for judging, promotional and marketing purposes
  • The material you submit cannot be obscene, offensive or defamatory or otherwise illegal
  • The information provided (excluding all personal contact information which will remain confidential) may be used by the National Happiness Awards for marketing purposes at any time in the future. Any sensitive parts of the submission should be clearly highlighted and marked with the words ‘not for publication’
  • Please ensure spellings of organisations and names of individuals are correct, as these will be published online and used throughout the Awards campaign, on marketing material and communications, across social media and on trophies if applicable
  • Ensure, to the best of your ability, submissions are written correctly in publishable form as they may be used online to promote your entry and the awards in general. The better the entry is presented, the better it reflects on your organisation
  • Your written entry must be no more than two A4 pages and in 12 point font size
  • You can upload up to three films or Youtube clips and three additional A4 pages of evidence-based information – this includes photographs that can added to A4.

Supporting material:

Our judges love supporting material even more than they love cake, and they REALLY love cake. So make sure you back up your submissions with material that can be used as evidence. This can include videos, documents, testimonials, links to articles, photographs, surveys and pdf documents; anything that shows the judges what you’ve done and why it works. For a full list of the appropriate formats see the Awards website.
If the material is online, in the form of newspaper articles or Youtube videos, for example, supply links and test the links to make sure they work.

Psst! handy hints and tips:

  • To the best of your ability, display how your nominee addresses and promotes the themes of happiness (education) or drivers of happiness (workplace) as illustrated in the Laughology Happiness Matrix. You can download these grids on the Happiness Awards page. What actions engender confidence, positive relationships, resilience, personal development and support? To make it simpler, use separate headings for each aspect.
  • Tell a story with your submission. Don’t just list initiatives you or your organisation have introduced, tell us why they were introduced and what effect they’ve had. Give us an idea of your organisation or the individual you are nominating. Provide some context and a back story. What challenges have been faced? Explain the trajectory of your story – where did you start and what did you do to get to where you are?
  • Chose the right category.
  • Size doesn’t matter (much), the key is quality. Our judges are smarter than they look and can sniff out a contrived nomination. They’d rather see a well-constructed, individualised single nomination backed up by quality evidence than scores of short nominations for the same organisation or individual which all say the same thing.
  • Quantify your submission with detail about the nominee’s creativity and innovation. Judges are looking for stand-out ideas and initiatives. Dave may well tell jokes in meetings and bring cakes in on Friday, but he needs to do a bit more to win a National Happiness Award. Tell us why Dave is so flipping great.
  • Emphasise the human aspect. Everything you describe in your nomination should have an impact on the people associated with the nominee.

Happiness Award Winners 2018

Happiness Award Winners 2018 are announced in a glittering awards ceremony at MediaCityUK

There wasn’t a dry eye (or a dry glass) in the house on Friday night when the winners were announced for the National Happiness Awards. Emotions and spirits were high as one-by-one, our happiness heroes took to the stage. Over 200 entries were whittled down to our final shortlist, and ultimately our seven winners, who were each honoured at the glittering ceremony in MediaCityUK, Salford. The event was hosted by Laughology’s very own Stephanie Davies and Dave Keeling and over 150 people attended. We are delighted to announce the winners and thank everyone who nominated, entered and supported the award. You are all happiness heroes.

Happiest Workplace: Bupa Place, Salford Quays, Manchester

Creating the happiest place to work was the core mission when Bupa developed its new offices, Bupa Place. The space is focused on ensuring every one of the 2500 people based there love working there.

Happiest Workplace was won by Bupa Place, who had put a lot of hard work in to making their space a positive, well and happy place to be

Happiest Workplace Person: Natalie Morgan-Dew, Mizz Twisted Cherry, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire

Natalie has overcome personal and health challenges and turned her experiences into positives which she uses to support and encourage others. She runs an alternative dance studio which teaches burlesque and pole dancing but which has also become a support network for the women who go there. Natalie has helped and has been a support for victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse, bereaved parents and people going through a range of personal and health difficulties.

Natalie Morgan-Dew, Mizz Twisted Cherry, Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire was the well-deserved Happiest Workplace person winner.

Happiest Team: Theodora Children’s Charity, London

The charity runs a team of ‘Giggle Doctors’ who are specially trained performers who visit children in hospitals, hospices and specialist care centres. Last year they visited over 33,000 children, bringing light and laughter to them and their families while helping to increase opportunities for play, reduce stress and anxiety and improve experiences of the medical environment.

A well deserved Happiest Team winner, Theodora Children’s Charity represented by Alice Barley.

Happiest Secondary School: Thistley Hough Academy, Stoke-on-Trent

Thistley Hough Academy has been in special measures twice in its history and was once deemed ‘unsaveable’ and came close to closure. With leadership, determination and creativity it has continued to improve and is now graded as Good with Outstanding features. This renaissance has been underpinned by works with a wide range of partners and has developed long-established relationships and completed many successful projects, including a lunchtime darts club for pupils and a visiting dentistry service.

Happiest Secondary school, Thistley Hough Academy, Stoke-on-Trent bounded to the stage, delighted to have won after working so hard to not only make the school a happy place but to ensure great standards too.

Happiest School Person: Stephen Hill, St Joseph’s RC Junior, Infant and Nursery School

Stephen Hill is determined to make a difference to childrens’ lives in his own school and the wider community. He has a desire to mould the children he teaches into well-rounded, fun loving, caring individuals.

Stephen Hill, St Joseph’s RC Junior, Infant and Nursery School was Happiest School Person. He couldn’t join us that evening as was busy raising awareness for other worthy causes, but had some colleagues attend

Happiest Pupil 2018 Shawn Sequeira, Lime Tree Primary School, Surbiton, Surrey

Shawn is blind, but is not defined by his disability, nor does he use it as an excuse not to have a go at something and sets his goals high. He drums, cooks, dances and takes a proactive role in helping others at his school and beyond understand blindness. He has a thirst of knowledge, an enthusiasm for learning and a zest for life.

The room couldn’t hold back the tears when Happiest Pupil, Shawn Sequeira of Lime Tree Primary School, Surbiton, Surrey came to collect his trophy and made a speech.

Happiest Primary School: Flakefleet Primary School, Fleetwood, Lancs

Flakefleet has seen its fortunes turn around dramatically thanks to staff who go above and beyond to support pupils. Situated in an area of high deprivation, many children and families need additional support. Staff have helped feed children, wash their clothes and even provide presents at birthdays and Christmas when necessary, which is all done with discretion and dignity.

Winners of Happiest Primary school – Flakefleet primary school. We think the whole school came along with a very proud Head teacher, Mr McPartlin saying a few thoughtful words.

National Happiness Awards

The Laughology Happiness Awards 2016 came to a glittering conclusion on Friday, 18th November, 2016, when the happiest people and places in the UK were honoured at a ceremony in London.

The awards were staged to celebrate Laughology’s tenth anniversary and to recognise like-minded people and places who harness the power of happiness to improve lives.

The winners of the National Happiness awards 2016, chosen by an independent panel of judges, were:

Silverdale Primary Academy impressed judges with its commitment to creating a happy environment for staff and pupils. Initiatives include a website to track pupil happiness and a year-round competition to ensure happiness stays at the forefront of school life. Pupils even go to other schools to tell them how to be happier.

Stuart McLean Vice Principal of Silverdale Primary Academy said: “It is a tremendous accolade and validates the work we do in the school which is based on positivity and happiness, which is embedded in all we do with our children and staff. We couldn’t ask for a better team of staff and children at the Academy and that’s what it’s all about for us.”

Jane Thomas runs the UK’s first Happy-centred school and places pupil well-being and happiness above all else. She has introduced a school curriculum which runs alongside the National Curriculum and encourages important childhood experiences, such as making mud pies and going to the theatre.

She said: “It’s humbling to win because it is really a team effort. Happiness is the keystone of any school. Children don’t want to come to school if they don’t feel safe, listened to, and happy. If they don’t feel like they can succeed and thrive they don’t want to learn. The awards have been amazing. To have so many like-minded people in the same room has been overwhelming.”

The Outward Bound Trust’s commitment to staff happiness and well-being impressed judges. Described as an amazing and inspiring place to work, the Trust has developed an initiative called ‘The Way We Work Together’. It enshrines and encourages values of mutual respect, autonomy, engagement and inclusiveness.

Francesca Scott, Outward Bound Trust Head of People Strategy, said: “We are over the moon because we’ve worked really hard to make the Outward Bound Trust somewhere where people really want to come and work. There were some amazing businesses in the awards so it was brilliant to win.”

The 2016 awards were sponsored by Herman Miller and Crown House Publishing and supported by government happiness adviser Sir Anthony Seldon who said: “The awards are important because they recognise that happiness is not just a nebulous concept. It is a vital component in the human condition that needs to be encouraged and nurtured in all areas of life.”

Laughology founder and CEO, Stephanie Davies, said: “Our winners and all our finalists have been amazing. The awards are our way of recognising and honouring those in the UK who, like us, are making the world a better place through happiness. I’ve been blown away by the reaction to the first ever Happiness Awards and this will now become an annual event that we know will grow bigger and bigger each year.

“They have captured the imagination of people and organisations across the UK and they prove that both business and education take happiness seriously.”
